Characters are listed in alphabetical order by their first names or last names if only their last names are given in the story. The character list is divided into three sections: the Rangers, the Youkai, and miscellaneous.
THE RANGERS
Jason Scott:Ninjared, 16-years-old, from Angel Grove East. Born in 1985. Jason's twin sister Janet was killed by members of the Purple Dragon Gang. He was chosen by Zordon to become the Red Tyranno Ranger in 2001. He lost his powers after the defeat of the evil witch Bandora. In 2002, he traveled to Japan to study abroad and became Ninjared after accidentally freeing the Youkai. As a Ranger, Jason controlled the Ninja Ape zord, Battle Ape zord, and Red Ape Shogunzord.
Jonathan Hunter:Ninjayellow, 16-years-old, from Angel Grove. Born in 1985. Jonathan was raised by a wealthy family who paid for the best tutors to teach him. But he preferred playing video games. In 2002, he was chosen to study abroad in Japan for a year. As a Ranger, Jonathan controlled the Ninja Bear zord, Battle Bear zord, and Yellow Bear Shogunzord.
Richie Trent:Ninjablue, 16-years-old, from Angel Grove. Born in 1985. Richie's father was murdered when he was young. In 2002, he learned that his father's killer had traveled to Japan. So he chose to study abroad as an excuse to enter the country and find the man who killed his father. As a Ranger, Richie controlled the Ninja Wolf zord, Battle Wolf zord, and Blue Wolf Shogunzord.
Trini Kwan: Ninjawhite, 16-years-old, from Angel Grove West. Born in 1985. Originally from Japan. Trini's father mysteriously disappeared when she was four (1989). He was eventually pronounced dead. Then Trini moved to the United States and was adopted by a family in Angel Grove. Her new father did not approve of her martial arts training. She was trained by her adopted grandfather, Master Tao. Trini was chosen by Zordon to become the Yellow Tiger Ranger in 2001. She lost her powers after the defeat of the evil witch Bandora. In 2002, she traveled to Japan to study abroad and became Ninjawhite. As a Ranger, Trini controlled the Ninja Crane zord, Battle Crane zord, and White Crane Shogunzord.
Zack Taylor:Ninjablack, 16-years-old, from Angel Grove North. Born in 1985. Zack was chosen by Zordon to become the Black Mammoth Ranger in 2001. He lost his powers after the defeat of the evil witch Bandora. In 2002, he traveled to Japan to study abroad and became Ninjablack after accidentally freeing the Youkai. As a Ranger, Zack controlled the Ninja Frog zord, Battle Frog zord, and Black Frog Shogunzord.
THE YOUKAI
Dorodoro:The grunts of the Youkai. Evil spirits not strong enough to possess host bodies. So they take solid forms of limited power and strength.
Juniya:The prince of the Youkai. His monster form was a skeletal warrior. His human form was a punk rocker who played an electric guitar and the piano.
Daimamou: The lord of the Youkai. He was imprisoned behind a seal that was separate from the prison of the other Youkai monsters. His son, Juniya, sought to free him from the seal.
Darabotchi:The sister of Daimamou and Yamanba.
Hana Ninja:Juniya used Youkai spirits to turn five cats into the Hana Ninja. While in their monster forms, they were called the Hana Rangers. Each Hana had her own color and flower: Yuri, Hana Orange, lilly; Ran, Hana Purple/ Violet, orchid; Ayame, Hana Blue, Iris; Suiren, Hana Green, Lotus and Sakura, Hana Pink, cherry blossom.
Yamanba:The brother of Daimamou and Yamanba.
Yugami, Professor:His human form was a scientist. He never revealed his monster form. Instead, he focused on creating weapons and technology to enhance other Youkai monsters.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Ayase:He and his older sister Mikoja discovered the blue vase that contained Ninjor, a Master that was imprisoned. The Youkai pursued Ayase and his sister to retrieve the vase. (Introduced in Chapter 15)
Cory:Jonathan Hunter's friend from Stone Canyon. Cory was chosen to study abroad the same year as Jonathan, and the two teens became quick friends. That friendship ended shortly after Jonathan became a Ranger. Cory fled back to the United States following a Youkai attack that almost got him killed. (Introduced in Chapter 01)
Guli:Taught Richie Trent martial arts so the boy could seek revenge for the murder of his father. (Introduced in Chapter 13)
Hakumenrou: Trini's birthfather. Hakumenrou was a scholar who studied the tales of the Youkai. Those tales became his obsession. He sought out the tomb of the Youkai and was tainted by the power of Daimamou. He went missing and was presumed dead. (Introduced in Chapter 14)
Jiraiya: The original Ninjablue 400 years ago.
Mei: A butterfly who transformed into a human after being exposed to the mystical energy of a Ninjazord scroll. (Introduced in Chapter 13)
Mikoja:She and her younger brother Ayase discovered the blue vase that contained Ninjor, a Master that was imprisoned. The Youkai pursued Ayase and Mikoja to retrieve the vase. (Introduced in Chapter 15)
Nekomaru: The Rangers' van. Enchanted by Sandaya with a cat-like spirit.
Ninjor:A student of the Sanshinshou. He was imprisoned in a blue bottle during the first war against the Youkai 400 years ago. (Introduced in Chapter 15)
Ryouske:A Youkai who shared the body of a child host. He despised the Youkai way. Ryouske was a friend to Sandaya and lived at Trini's father's mansion. He was typically accompanied by two dogs that could transform into wolf-like warriors named Tarou and Jirou. (Introduced in Chapter 13)
Sandaya:A ninja dispatcher during the first war against the Youkai 400 years ago. A pupil of the Sanshinshou, his powers granted him a long life span. Sandaya watched over the swords of the Kakuranger in case the Youkai ever reappeared. He befriended Trini's father Hakumenrou in the 1980s. After Hakumenrou's reported death, Sandaya made sure that Trini was taken to the United States and raised by a good family while she awaited her destiny. (Introduced in Chapter 01)
Sanshinshou:The Three God Generals, born from The Power. They were Muteki Shogun, Kakure Shogun, and Tsubasamaru. The mystical beings were born to bring order to the fight against the Youkai and pass down the art of Ninpo, true magick, not simple tricks that previous ninja had employed. Combined, the Sanshinshou represented the elemental forces of fire, water, earth, lightning, light, and wind. They appeared on the mortal plane through avatars modeled after their forms, the White Falcon, ShogunMegazord, and NinjaMegazord. They instructed Ninjor as their first student, and later taught the original Ninja Rangers and Sandaya. After the Youkai were sealed 400 years ago, the Sanshinshou worked with Zordon to prepare for their release by creating the Doron Changers and Ninja Power Coins.
Saizou:The original Ninjablack 400 years ago.
Sasuke: The original Ninjared 400 years ago.
Seikai:The original Ninjayellow 400 years ago.
Tarou & Jirou: Two ninja who accompanied Hakumenrou in the search for the Youkai tomb. Daimamou spared their lives but turned them into a pair of dogs for cruel amusement. They were able to transform into wolf-like warriors as an unintended side effect of the spell.
Tsuruhime: The original Ninjawhite 400 years ago.
Yuuriko:A 13-year-old girl who befriended Trini in Japan. She spoke English and was skilled in the martial arts. (Introduced in Chapter 16)
