Ultimate Legacy: Chapter Two

The Worth of this Planet

The Legacy Galleon flew through a reality storm that battered its hull and singed its armor. The impact nearly knocked the rangers to the floor of their cockpit.

“This again?” Mat asked. “Really?”

Tyler said nothing. He snapped his wheel, and the ship throttled through the edge of the storm.

Kym sighed with relief when they made it to safety. “Thank god…”

“I’m pretty sure God hates us,” Mat said.

The ship swerved to port and faced a planet: An Earth.

“Again?” Kira asked.

“Is it the same one?” Seth asked.

Tyler looked at a readout next to his wheel. “No…it’s different.”

“And I suppose we’re landing there,” Mat said, less than enthused.

“Look on the bright side,” Kym said. “No Armada-“

Mat shushed her. “Please don’t jinx it.”

An alarm beeped on Tyler’s console.

Aaaaaand you jinxed it,” Mat said.

The rangers moved into the main crew hold. Mat walked to a small control pedestal and pulled up an image on the main monitor. The image showed an Armada fleet.

“They’re persistent little buggers,” Mat said. “Persistent and annoying. They’re in a holding pattern between the moon and Earth.”

“They don’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon…” Kira said.

“What to do, what to do,” said the rangers’ bird-like droid, Navi.

Navi stood on a pedestal above Tyler’s chair. Weeks ago, Mat had salvaged the droid, originally called Takku, and rebuilt him.

Kym looked through the nearest viewport. “I hope the people there are OK…If there are people.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Seth said.

Kira nodded. “Right. It’s not like we can save the universe one planet at a time. We need to find the Ultimate Secret. Of course, every time we try to do that….we get caught up in a fight. It’s no wonder the Armada has its eyes on us…”

“We’ll just have to find what we need and leave,” Tyler said casually.

“If it’s here,” Seth said.

“If it’s not, we still leave,” Tyler said. He looked to Navi, the droid who originally told them about the Ultimate Secret’s connection with Earth, without knowing the specifics. “Bird, do your…vision-telling thing.”

“I’m not a bird! I’m Navi!” the droid said.

“Just do it,” Tyler said.

Navi snapped open his wings and fluttered off his pedestal. “TresaNavi-gai-to!”

The droid shot up and bashed against the ceiling. He fluttered downward, as if in a daze.

“A human in black…of magick…will tell you something…useful,” he said as he landed on his pedestal. “That’s all.”

Seth shook his head. “What’s that even mean?”

“That’s…obscure,” Kira said.

“I was going to say useless,” Mat said. “But a lead’s a lead. I’ll take pretty much anything I can get at this point.”

“A person in black,” Kym said as she looked out the viewport. “I wonder who we’re looking for…”

The rangers landed on an Earth that looked normal, between 2001 and 2010 AD, not that they could tell. Not really.

“Huh…” Mat said as he watched people go about their daily lives. “Weird…”

“What?” Kym asked. “Everything seems normal.”

“That’s what’s weird,” Mat said.

Dozens of people moved about the city plaza, and many seemed to wear black. Nuns. Men in suits. Teens in slick jackets.

Kira shook her head. “How are we supposed to find the right person?”

Mat shrugged. “We could just start asking. That wouldn’t be awkward at all.”

“Hey…” a voice said from nearby. “You’re Rangers…aren’t you?”

They turned to see a 13-year-old boy: An alternate version of Teddy Oliver, younger brother of Tommy Oliver through adoption, and the former Red Samurai Ranger. The boy wore a black jacket and rode on a bicycle.

“You know us?” Seth asked skeptically. “You shouldn’t…”

Most people barely understood the nature of their existence in the shattered realities, let alone possessed the ability to recognize people from outside their reality fragments.

“I just…” Teddy said. “I just do.”

Teddy dropped his bicycle and walked towards the rangers. “I think I saw you…somewhere else. You used the Keys…the Power Rangers. Samurai Rangers. Mystic Rangers.”

“Our Ranger Keys?” Kym asked.

Tyler pulled out his Mystic, Samurai, and Battle Task Force keys. “You saw us use these? You weren’t even there to-“

Teddy snatched the Samurai Red key and kicked Tyler backward.

The boy ran to his bike and hopped on. “You left. Just like you’ll leave again. You wouldn’t even stand up to the Armada!”

“What the hell’s wrong with him?” Mat asked.

“He’s Fragged,” Seth said, a term used to describe people whose minds shifted back and forth between the past, present, future and alternate realities.

Teddy sped away on his bike.

Tyler smirked. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a good chase.”

Tyler ran after the boy.

“Tyler, wait!” Kym shouted as she followed.

Tyler and Kym dashed around a corner that seemed to shift in time. The streets degraded. Grass and weeds grew through cracks in the concrete. The city looked as if in ruin.

A Flux World, they called it: A world that fluctuated between the past, present and future.

The rangers barely noticed. They experienced these occurrences often as part of their normal lives.

Tyler stopped when he noticed Kym behind him. He lowered his shoulders with a silent sigh. “Why are you following me, Kym?”

“I’m worried,” she said. “I don’t want you to hurt that kid.”

“You think I’d do that?” Tyler asked.

“I…” Kym hesitated. “I don’t know. I’m following you because…I don’t know.”

Tyler rolled his eyes. “Fine…do what you want.”

“Fine,” she said as she followed Tyler after the boy.

Thirteen-year-old Teddy Oliver pedaled as fast as he could. He felt drawn to the Samurai Red Key, as if it belonged to him somehow.

His mind raced in a panic. The Machines. The Gedoushuu. Sauron. The Mogralord. N’ma…N’ma…

The final name threw him into a panic. What did it mean?

He skid to a halt when he saw Tyler standing on a pedestrian bridge above the street. The ranger stood casually with his arms crossed over his chest.

“Hey kid,” he shouted. Tyler leapt to the street and extended his hand. “I’ll take that Key back.”

“Why?” Teddy asked. “It’s not like you’ll use it to protect us. Right?”

“Not really, no,” Tyler said. “We’re thinking big picture.”

Kym joined Tyler on the street.

Teddy took several steps back while clutching the Ranger Key.

“This key…” Teddy said. “It doesn’t even belong to you. It belonged to the Earth. To its champions.”

“I don’t care who it belonged to,” Tyler said. “It’s mine now. The person who saved my life trusted me with it. I need it…to keep my promise.”

“That’s not my problem…” Teddy whispered. “I have my own reasons for needing this key. For fighting the Armada.”

“You can’t…” Kym said softly.

“Why do you want to fight so badly, anyway?” Tyler asked.

Teddy shook his head. “I’m not…” His mind scattered. “My friends. My brother…they died in the Legend War.”

Tyler recognized the name…

Weeks after waking in the Shattering, Tyler fought a group of X-Borgs on a support beam. Explosions flared around him as he flipped a grunt from the beam and punched a soldier’s gut.

An X-Borg chopped its staff and bashed Tyler to his knees. The grunt lifted its staff to strike again.

But a red-clad figure dashed past the X-Borg and cut him down. The figure, a Ranger, slashed through X-Borgs with bursts of spark. His blade tore through their bodies and scattered them to pieces.

Another wave of X-Borgs dropped onto the support beam. The Red Ranger stood between the X-Borgs and Tyler, keeping his back to the teen.

“You’re not done yet, Tyler,” he said. “Your journey’s just started.”

The Red Ranger turned, crouched next to Tyler, and lifted a treasure chest. “These belong to you now. Use them to fight, and find the Ultimate Secret. The Final Prophecy.”

The chest contained the Ranger Keys.

The Red Ranger pushed the chest into Tyler’s hands. “Do you understand? You’ll take your place…someday…in the Great Legend War.”

The Red Ranger stood, held his sword back, and charged towards the X-Borgs.

Tyler climbed to his feet. He watched the Red Ranger hack and slash through dozens of X-Borgs. Explosions erupted across the support beam and engulfed the Ranger, along with his opponents.

The shockwave hurled Tyler off his feet.

Teddy shook his head. “I don’t want to see it anymore,” he said. “People getting killed…”

Tyler knitted his brow and felt a pang of guilt. He focused his life on finding the Ultimate Secret, never giving much thought to the people trapped within the shattered realities.

Suddenly, a wave of Armada ships passed over the city.

Teddy knitted his brow and ran towards the ships.

“Teddy, wait!” Kym asked.

“His name…” Tyler asked. “How did you know his name?”

“I…” Kym shook her head. “I don’t know.”

The Armada dropped dozens of X-Borgs onto the streets.

Seth, Mat and Kira watched the Armada ships from a distance.

“They’re back…” Seth said coldly.

“Not again…” Mat said as he cowered behind Kira. He placed his hands on her shoulders. “What’ll we do? Running sounds good. Can we run?”

Kira swatted his hands away. “For now, let’s find Tyler and Kym.”

The X-Borgs dropped to the streets alongside an Action Commander, Bongon. Gray armor covered the creature’s bulky green body, with tendrils and tentacles snaking from its face, arms and legs. The villain carried a green, organic shoulder cannon.

Bongon waved his cannon and fired bursts of energy that blasted through buildings with clouds of rubble and debris.

The creature laughed with madness. “This feels! So! Good!”

Ragged citizens screamed and ran with panic. X-Borgs chased after them and opened fire with their staff cannons. The blasts tore through the helpless people, whipping them off their feet.

Teddy ran to the scene and gripped the Samurai Red Key. Tyler and Kym followed.

Tyler pulled out his morpher - and handed it to Teddy.

Teddy arced an eyebrow, surprised.

“You said you wanted to fight, right?” Tyler asked.

“Tyler…” Kym cautioned.

Tyler ignored her. “If you beat them, you can keep the key. If you don’t, you keep nothing. Got it?”

“Tyler,” Kym said. “That’s ridiculous. You can’t-“

Teddy took the morpher. He inserted the key and turned. “SAAAAMURAI RANGERS!”

Energy flashed around him as he morphed into Samurai Red.

Samurai Red looked down at his hands. “I…I did it!”

The Red Ranger unsheathed his sword and charged to attack.

“Teddy…” Kym started after him, but Tyler grabbed her arm.

“Let him go,” Tyler said.

Samurai Red dashed past two grunts while parrying their staffs; he turned and cut them down with bursts of spark. He spun to his side and side-kicked a grunt, then slashed upward with a burst of spark.

The Red Ranger charged through the enemy ranks, parrying and blocking their blows, and slashing them down with his sword. He swung the blade through quick and fluid patterns, hacking through their limbs, bodies and weapons.

The X-Borgs tried to surround the Red Ranger. But he twisted and turned through the group while swinging his sword and slashing through the grunts left and right.

A group of five X-Borgs pounced towards Samurai Red from ahead. The Red Ranger charged forward and cut a grunt down with each step.

Kym and Tyler watched from nearby.

“You think he’ll be OK?” Kym asked.

“Who knows,” Tyler said.

Seth and the others ran to the scene and regrouped with their teammates.

“What’s going on?” Mat asked.

Kira knitted her brow. “Who’s that?”

Seth shook his head with disbelief. “The boy who stole the Ranger Key…”

Samurai Red spun and swung through a wide arc that slashed three grunts, whipping them back with bursts of spark.

The Red Ranger hopped forward and chopped his sword through a grunt’s chest, driving the grunt to the ground with a burst of spark.

Samurai Red cut the last X-Borg down.

He turned his attention towards the Action Commander, charged, and lunged with a chop.

But Bongon blocked and grabbed the Red Ranger’s sword. “Looks like you don’t know your place.”

The monster tossed the boy aside. He crashed and tumbled across the street.

Bongon stalked towards the fallen Ranger.

Slowly, Samurai Red climbed to his feet. He lunged with a chop. But the monster blocked, kicked the Ranger’s gut, and bashed the back of his neck. The blow sent him staggering forward.

Bongon stomped the fallen Ranger’s back, lifted him by the neck, and kneed his gut with bursts of spark.

The monster hurled the boy aside. He smashed against the side of a building and crashed to the ground. The impact knocked him from his armor with a flash of red light.

The morpher and Samurai Red key fell and skipped across the street.

Bongon laughed and walked away.

Kym ran to Teddy’s side and leaned next to him. “Are you okay…?”

Teddy shook his head. “It’s no use…I’m not strong enough. I can’t…I can’t protect the Earth.”

“So you finally get it?” Tyler asked as he picked up his morpher and key. “You want to protect the planet? Find a different way to do it.”

“How?” Teddy asked.

“Figure it out yourself,” Tyler said as he started to walk away. He stopped and looked over his shoulder. “Hey…The people here…Most of them don’t even understand what’s happening. They’re Fragged. Echoes. Is this place even worth protecting?”

“It is,” Teddy said.

“Why?” Tyler asked.

Teddy hesitated. “If you’re really Rangers…You should figure that out yourselves.”

Tyler smirked. “Maybe we’ll do that…”

The ranger walked away as his teammates joined him.

Bongon blasted through streets that looked like the setting of a 1950s movie.

Citizens ran and screamed with panic as the monster opened fire. X-Borgs and Zergs joined the monster, who laughed with joy at the destruction he caused.

Nearby, Tyler and his teammates walked to the scene.

Bongon looked to the warriors. “You…the wanted renegades. What are you doing here?”

“Looking for something,” Tyler said as he and his teammates armed their morphers and Ranger Keys.

“It’s morphin’ time!” Tyler shouted. Together they called out: “Ultimate Transform!”

They inserted their Ranger Keys into their morphers, which called out: “POOOOOWER RANGERS!”

They morphed into their Ranger forms and stepped into fighting poses.

“Ultimate Red Ranger.”

“Ultimate Blue Ranger.”

“Ultimate Green Ranger.”

“Ultimate Yellow Ranger.”

“Ultimate Pink Ranger.”

“Ultimate Task Force…” They called out together: “Power Rangers!”

The Rangers armed their swords and blasters.

“Let’s make this showy,” the Red Ranger said.

He opened fire; bullets blasted through X-Borgs with bursts of spark.

The Rangers charged with guns blazing. Their bullets tore through the cybernetic soldiers, puncturing through their armor and exploding within their circuitry.

They smashed through the enemy lines with blades slashing, tearing through X-Borgs with bursts of spark.

The Red Ranger hacked two grunts aside and blasted an X-Borg at point-blank range.

The Blue Ranger stabbed through an X-Borg’s gut, pressed forward, and punctured through a second grunt. He whipped his blade free, ripping the two grunts apart.

“Kym!” the Blue Ranger shouted to his teammate.

The Pink Ranger tossed him her sword, and she tossed him his blaster. The Pink Ranger caught the blaster and spun, firing bullets that ripped through X-Borgs that tried to surround her.

A group of X-Borgs armed their staffs like cannons and fired at the Green Ranger. The Ranger dove aside as their blasts sparked around him.

The Green Ranger rolled into a crouched position.

“Mat!” the Yellow Ranger shouted to him.

The Yellow Ranger tossed him her blaster, and he tossed her his sword.

The Green Ranger caught the blaster and fired volleys of bullets that blasted through a wave of X-Borgs.

The Yellow Ranger caught the sword and dual-wielded through a wave of X-Borgs. She hacked and slashed, tearing them apart as she pushed through their ranks.

Nearby the Red Ranger stabbed through an X-Borg’s chest.

A trio of Zergs aimed at the Ranger and fired bolts of blue energy.

The Red Ranger grabbed the X-Borg and used him as a shield. The bolts blasted the X-Borg with massive bursts of spark.

The Red Ranger tossed the X-Borg aside and blasted the Zergs. His bullets sparked against their armor and knocked them several steps back.

The rest of the Rangers regrouped around their leader. The team inserted Ranger Keys into their weapons and stepped back.

The keys and weapons pulsed with power as they energized: “FIIIIIINAL WAAAAAVE!”

The Pink Ranger and Yellow Ranger fired energized bullets that blasted through a Zerg. The Blue Ranger and Yellow Ranger dashed forward and slashed through streaks of energy that tore through a grunt.

Then, the Red Ranger fired an energized bullet, and then slashed his sword. The blade fired a wave of energy that splashed against the bullet, forming a surging energy pulse that tore through the soldier with massive bursts of spark.

The three Zergs collapsed and exploded into flames and shrapnel.

Suddenly, Bongon stomped towards the Rangers and fired a volley of missiles. The Rangers dove aside as they slashed the missiles with bursts of spark.

The general laughed as he stalked towards his opponents.

“Don’t be so cocky, renegades…I’m not as easy to beat as Zergs!”

The monster fired a volley of missiles that streaked towards the Rangers.

They quickly armed a set of Ranger Keys.

“SPD! Emergency!” They inserted their keys into their morphers: “DEEEEEECA RANGERS!”

They morphed into the DECA Rangers, armed their blasters, and fired at the missiles. The Rangers blasted the projectiles from the air with massive bursts of spark and flame.

When the last bullet exploded, they turned to Bongon and opened fire. They blasted the monster with bursts of spark that knocked him several steps backward.

The monster grumbled with annoyance and armed a pair of fist blades. “I’m not done yet…I can do more than just shoot!”

He charged to attack.

The Rangers armed another set of Ranger Keys.

“Ninjetti! Change!” They inserted their keys into their morphers and shifted form with bursts of energy. Their morphers shouted: “HUUUUUURRICANE TASK FORCE!”

They transformed into the Hurricane Task Force Power Rangers: Hurricane Red, Hurricane Yellow, Hurricane Blue, Crimson Thunder and Navy Thunder.

They unsheathed their blades and dashed through blurs of motion. They past Bongon while slashing the monster with bursts of spark. They moved faster than sight and hacked the monster, cutting his armor and piercing his flesh, each blow sparking on impact.

The Rangers landed as secondary explosions tore through the monster. But he stood his ground.

The team armed Red Ranger Keys.

“SAAAAAMURAI RANGERS!” Tyler shifted into Samurai Red.

“GAAAAAAO RANGERS!” Seth shifted into Gao Red.

“SEEEEEERAPH RANGERS!” Mat shifted into Seraph Red.

“JUUUUUUUNGLE FURY!” Kira shifted into Jungle Fury Red.

“MYYYYYSTIC RANGERS!” Kym shifted into Mystic Red.

Samurai Red lifted his sword. “This is going to hurt…”

Mystic Red and Red Seraph moved in.

Mystic Red thrust her staff. “Magi Magika!

Red Seraph slid a card into his morpher and snapped it shut. “Tensou!

Mystic Red fired a wave of flame, and Red Seraph fired a burst of wind that intensified the flame. The super-heated blast washed over the monster with massive bursts of spark that tore his body.

Gao Red and Jungle Fury Red pounced through the flames and launched at the monster with a flurry of punches and kicks. They moved like animals, bashing the monster back a step with each blow.

They stepped aside, and Samurai Red pounced between them. He swung through streaks of fiery energy that ripped through the monster with massive bursts of spark.

Bongon collapsed, and his body exploded into a sphere of flame.

The Rangers turned and walked away, as Samurai Red held his blade casually over his shoulder.

The rangers returned to the Legacy Galleon, which flew above the city.

Mat and Kira looked out the viewport as the sun set in the distance.

“Nice…” Mat said at the sight of the setting sun. “That’s not something you see much of these days…”

Kira nodded. “I wonder what happened to that boy?”

“Who knows…” Seth said as he leaned back on the couch.

Kym walked towards them. “You know…what Tyler did? I think in his own way…he was looking out for Teddy.”

Seth arced an eyebrow. “By throwing him into a fight?”

“I did say 'in his own way,'” Kym said. “I don’t know. It’s hard to put my finger on. But it’s almost like Tyler knew him. Like we all did, maybe.”

“Whether we did or not, he wasn’t any help,” Seth said. He looked to Navi. “Was your prediction wrong?”

Navi fluttered his robotic wings. “What? No, I’m never wrong. I’m Navi.”

Tyler stood on the bow of his ship and crossed his arms over his chest. He thought of Teddy, and a fragment of memory flashed through his mind.

“Samurai Scribe! Ha!” Energy flashed around Teddy and his teammates as they morphed into their armor.

They joined dozens of other Rangers and champions and leapt into battle.

Tyler lowered his head and looked to the Samurai Red Key. Teddy…I think I watched you die.
